In November, 2016, staff at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows conducted routine water testing after a significant rain storm, and promptly reported a potential health issue to the Placer County Department of Environmental Health. At that time, high levels of E. coli and coliform bacteria were detected in the drinking water at Squaw Valley’s upper mountain.
According to Wesley Nicks, director of the Placer County Department of Environmental Health, after consistent treatment, three out of the four wells now show low levels of coliform and no levels of E. coli.
As per a statement released by Liesl Kenney, Public Relations Director for Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, upon discovery of the water contamination back in November, Squaw Valley immediately took steps to report the issue and have been consulting with leading water safety experts to resolve the matter, and at no point was contaminated drinking water made available to the public. Kenney states that they have taken steps to eliminate the contamination and will continue to do so until health officials deem the water is safe to drink once again.
Kenney further stated that Squaw Valley takes this issue seriously, and their customers’ safety is paramount. While this issue is being resolved, their guests at both High Camp and Gold Coast will have access to all facilities, and until regular water usage is restored, free bottled water is available.
Squaw Valley will continue to work with health officials and water safety specialists until this matter is resolved, and will keep guests updated about the issue.
